There are a number of different variants to choose from. Most games involve at least one round of betting. The player with the best hand wins the pot. In some variants, a player may win by bluffing.

A poker hand is a combination of five cards. The highest possible hand is five of a kind. The lowest hand is 6-4-3-2-A. These hands are ranked by their odds of occurring in a certain game. In a two or more suit game, the lowest hand is 7-5-4-3-2. The ace is often treated as the lowest card. In a seven-card stud, the player with the lowest pair must also have a hand of five cards. The dealer will usually shuffle cards to ensure the correct order is followed.

A poker player must make at least one forced bet in order to play. The bet may be an ante or blind bet. The bettor may also decide to bluff by stating that he has the best hand. In a pot-limit game, the bettor can bet or raise the amount of the pot. A player who folds in the final round of betting loses the right to compete for the pot. A poker showdown is the point at which all the cards in the deck are revealed. The player who makes the best five-card hand or the best combination of four of a kind, or a combination of two or more of these hands, wins the pot. This type of showdown can be a deciding factor in some games, but a player can win without being the best by making a bet that no other player is willing to call.
